Alternatives to plastic?

As part of our attempt to use less plastic, we have been testing out the current buzz-item - beeswax cloth instead of cling film.  To be fair, we didn't use a lot of cling film anyway but it's sometimes useful to wrap up some pastry and things like that.  I'd seen it on Buzzfeed a while ago and thought about giving it a go!

So, I ordered some of the stuff from BooBalou (www.boobalou.co.uk).   It's called "abeego" and is basically cloth coated in beeswax.  It's made in Canada (which will of course mean that my carbon footprint will be up for this one!).

Here is a picture of it in use:

It's worked well - is easy to use and importantly to clean and despite the hot and humid environment in which we live, seems to be lasting well!  My next step though is to make my own - I've found a site which has a "recipe" I'll be trying soon - DIY beeswax wrap!

We've also been testing out bamboo toothbrushes, using old plastic bottles as seedling pots, bamboo cotton buds, making our own yoghurt to reduce plastic pot consumption, and starting to use soap nuts.  More on our experience of these later!

What are we now looking for - reusable water bottles that don't leak! I had some metal ones but they are all leaking round the top and have broken lids.  I'll be on the lookout and also looking for tips from others!
